Choosing Between Acrylic and Polyurethane Waterproofing Systems: What Suits Your Roof Best?

, by Apostolos Apostolopoulos, 1 min reading time

One of the most common questions we get from customers is: "What’s the difference between acrylic and polyurethane products, and which one should I choose?" While this article offers general comparisons between the two types, we’ll mainly focus on the products distributed by our company.

🟢 Acrylic-Based Solutions (e.g., Ktisotop)

  • Acrylic products are typically easier to apply and a solid choice for those seeking an affordable waterproofing solution for their roof.
  • Water-based and dilutable with water, acrylic systems simplify the application process—no need to deal with solvents.
  • Designed to offer protection for around 3–4 years before needing renewal.
  • Budget-friendly and can be paired with a basic acrylic primer.

However…

  • Acrylic coatings don’t perform well under freezing temperatures.
  • They’re not suitable for roofs with poor slope or standing water.

🔵 Polyurethane-Based Systems (e.g., Anydron 2K)

  • These are premium-grade products that offer long-lasting waterproofing—up to 10 years when applied correctly with primer and two full coats.
  • Their excellent elasticity makes them ideal for areas with harsh winters.
  • They can handle standing water without absorbing moisture, essentially working like a liquid tank.

For best results, we recommend using the epoxy primer Ktisepox Hydro PR before applying polyurethane. You’ll also need an electric mixer for blending the two components along with the recommended thinner.

💬 While polyurethane systems may cost more upfront, they’re a long-term investment that can save you money and peace of mind for the next decade.
